WinCatalog 2012 (version 3.5.11) fixes the issue which caused the collection file size increase. Previously when you updated (or synchronized) a disk or folder with pictures using any prior version of WinCatalog 2012, WinCatalog added new thumbnails for pictures but did not delete old ones from the collection. These additional thumbnails increased the size of the collection files.

Now the issue is fixed. You do not need to perform any special actions to clean-up the collection. Next time when you update your discs or folders WinCatalog will cleanup all extra-thumbnails and will keep only a single copy of each image.

upd: the new version also adds 3 new columns to the list view: Disk Total, Free and Used spaces. You can show these columns by making a right mouse click on the column header of the list view.

Great news, Windows 8 Consumer Preview has been presented by Microsoft a few days ago and for today we have tested WinCatalog 2012 on both x64 and x86 versions of the new operating system. The results were as expected: WinCatalog works just fine under both versions.

The new version of WinCatalog 2012 (version 3.5.9) has been just released. The new version adds grouping for search results which helps to search for duplicates (please see the previous post for details) and some minor bug fixes. HTML reports will come very soon with version 3.6.

The new version of WinCatalog 2012 (version 3.5.9) which will be released very soon will have a new ability which will help in finding duplicated items.

To start finding duplicates just type a search query as you did previously, click the down arrow on the search button and select “Find Duplicates”. WinCatalog 2012 will run the search but the search results will be grouped by any field (or by a set of fields) by your choice.

To add new grouping rule just drag the column header from the list view control into the grouping area.

This is an example of duplicated items grouped by previously calculated MD5 hash and then by name.

We are glad to inform you that the new updated version of WinCatalog has been just released. It contains some improvements and new features.

1. The search function behavior has been modified. Now you shouldn’t add leading asterisk into the search queries to find all occurrences of the search term.
2. The ability to automatically backup your collection files on a regular basis has been added. WinCatalog will gently remind you to backup your data (or it will do that automatically).
3. The collection converter has been improved. Now it can convert collections created with any previous version of WinCatalog (including WinCatalog Light).
4. Now it is possible to minimize WinCatalog during the scanning process.
5. The option to unlock list view columns has been added. Now it is possible to scroll list view right and left.
6. A drag&drop issue has been fixed.
7. The ability to access the program documentation (help file) from the main window has been added.
8. WinCatalog now automatically rotates thumbnails according to EXIF orientation tag (on processing pictures).
9. WinCatalog can now generate CSV reports (HTML reports are coming) based on a search results or on a custom set of folders.

Some features have not been included into the update, but will be released with the next one:

1. The ability to exclude hidden and system files and folders (like Recycle Bin) from the scanning.
2. Basic HTML reports.
3. The ability to search for duplicates.
4. The ability to export a part of a collection into another collection file.

New Year 2012 is the year of significant improvements for WinCatalog. The development of the new major version 4.0 has been officially started today on December 30, 2011. Version 4 will have its own and new platform to be more powerful, featureful and reliable (but the collection files created with any previous version will be supported).  The new version will be developed simultaneously with updating the current version. The first preview will be available in Q2, 2012.

upd: The issue with “WinCatalog.log” file on the desktop is fixed. It was a hardcoded debug info inside the program. Now it is switched off. Please re-download and re-install the new version if you see the file. Sorry for the inconvenience!

The last beta version (#10) of WinCatalog 2011 has been released today.

Most important improvements:

• The ability to import a collection file has been added;
• New search filters for displaying folders and files has have been added;
• The ability to **change item type **for disks is added;
• WinCatalog 2011 has multilingual interface. English, French, Romanian and Russian languages are currently available.
• “Disk number” column has been added to the main window;
• A lot of bugs have been fixed.

WinCatalog 2011 beta 2 has just been published.

The most important changes since Beta 1:

1. Collection file format has been changed to provide fast search in any language.

2. Thumbnails generation for pictures have been completely rewritten and now works faster.

3. Extraction of ID3 tags from audio files has been completely rewritten as well for better performance. WinCatalog 2011 can also keep thumbnails for images stored inside mp3 files.

4. The ability to print any view has been added

5. Now you can flexible configure scanning options. The long file operations (MD5 and CRC32 calculations) have been switched off by default.

6. The ability to filter search results has been added.

7. The abilities to set collection title and comments have been added.

8. The ability to set master password for a collection file is added.

9. The ability to configure search index has been added.

10. Reported bugs and issues have been fixed.

If you have beta 1 installed on your computer please uninstall it first. WinCatalog 2011 beta 2 also does not support files created with beta 1.

September is almost gone but the second beta of new WinCatalog has not been released yet. We have received a lot of feedback on the first beta version and now alongside with the adding of new features we are improving the productivity.

The search function works fast and brings the results within a couple of seconds for really huge collection file which contains more than 3 millions of records. As a comparison you may check the same characteristic for the current version. WinCatalog 2009 needs a minute and a half for the equal job. In other words the search function of the new version is at least 30 times faster.

Now we’re working at speeding up the disc scanning process which have got a lot of complains from first users. In comparison to any previous version, the new WinCatalog has a lot to do during the disc scanning and each operation like the thumbnail creation or the archives contents extraction takes time to be performed.

Please do not lose your patience! The next public version of new WinCatalog will be available within a few weeks.

We are glad to announce that the first beta version of WinCatalog 2010 has been published today.

The new version is database driven. It can operate with collections of any size. No matter how many discs or files are stored in your collection – WinCatalog 2010 will handle all of them!

The second great feature is that WinCatalog 2010 can create picture thumbnails for most popular image types and store them inside the catalog. The thumbnail previews are available even without the link to the original files, so if you search for a photo or picture, you can preview it BEFORE reaching the disc!

WinCatalog 2010 is available for downloading and testing, however it is not available for sale until September 1st (while it has beta status). Every user who purchased WinCatalog 2009 will get the upgrade for free after that date. The upgrade from earlier paid versions of WinCatalog will be 50% of the single license price (US $14.95). The upgrade will be available on September 1st when suffix Beta will be removed from the title.
